Here's the short version: every element application has a weight, called a gauge unit. When you apply a second element, it consumes the first one based on gauge size. Bigger gauge wipes out the smaller one and leaves a remainder. Smaller gauge can't fully consume the bigger one, so the first element stays on the enemy and waits for the next hit.

Why does this matter? Because Vaporize works in both directions, but not equally. Hydro first, Pyro triggers — 1.5x multiplier. Pyro first, Hydro triggers — 2x multiplier. That gap compounds across every fight. It's why someone with worse numbers can clear faster: they're getting the 2x version of a reaction you're getting at 1.5x.
